KAPONGA CIVIC AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Kaponga Town Board was held last evening, when there were present: Commissioners A. R. Bates (chairman),, J. S. Charters, R. A. Law, C. E. Betts, J. P. Gibson and A. J: Herbert-.

Hie chairman apologised for the absence of the' Town Clerk (Mr. G. P. Cook) through illness. Miss Hill, of the clerical staff, filled the clerk’s position during the meeting.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. The electrical engineer (Mr. T. B. Merson) reported : Power Stations.—Both plants continue to operate satisfactorily, neither mechanical nor electrical defects being experienced during the month. Owing to the heavy rains at the commencement of the month the stream flow is now well above the normal for the first time this year. As a result both stations are working continuously, and No. 2 station is now able to handle the whole of the country burden.

Reticulation. —With the gradual decrease in the milking motor load, I hop© to be able to make an early start with the reconstruction of certain country lines. A start will be made in the vicinity of Rowan, and upon completion of that section the line between the Rowan Road and Kaponga on the Eltliam Road will I>© brought up to the requirements of the regulations.

Members of the board generally expressed satisfaction at the improved conditions in regard to the water supply. The report was adopted. FOREMAN’S REPORT.

The foreman reported having cleaned the water tables on Eltliam Road west and the cemetery road. One' coat of cold patch had been laid on the footpath at the Grand Central corner; he was well satisfied with the result so far, and recommended the laying of a second coat. Work at present in hand consisted; of gravelling the cemetery road. The Health Department- had advised the opening of the septic tank for inspection. SANITARY INSPECTION.

The Health Inspector (Mr. R. Gooding) had nothing of a notifiable infectious nature to report since December 1, when .a case of scarlet fever was notified. The absence of infection, he said, was matter for gratification. House-to-house inspections had been carried out and defects 1 remedied where- required. Plumbing and drainage inspections had also been carried out. The medical officer of health had inspected the rubbish depot, and recommended that a general cleaning up he put in hand and all combustible material burned.

There was ay, abnormal flow at the septic tanks, cine to. the fact that crude sewerage was being ejected. This had been found due to the automatic flushing cistern at, the heads of sowers and at the schools. The hoard’s overseer had undertaken to regulate the cisterns' 3 at the heads of sowers, and the schools were/shut, off after school hours. Tie had also to make provision for regulating flushes at longer intervals. > DEPUTATIONS TO BOARD. A deputation from the Ka.pp.nga Cycle Club, comprising Messrs. W. H. L. Roberts and H. W. Bocock, waited on the board with a request for assistance in improving the cycle track oil Victoria Park, with a view to minimising the risk of accident in the course of cycle races. Cr. C. E. Betts was deputed, with jxiwer to act, to inspect the track. Messrs. P. Harding, P. Thoumine, and A. Thomson, representing the Kaponga Town Board, also waited on the hoard, asking assistance in the purchase, of new instruments. A sympathetic bearing was grantedto the deputation and, on the motion of Cr. Betts, it was decided to authorise the purchase of instruments by Bandmaster Thoumine. GENERAL. On the suggestion of the clerk, it was decided to instal a. high-powered gramouhone for use in connection with the board’s cinema in place, of a pi an is to. An arrangement could be made for the hire of records to synchronise with the films shown. The chairman and Cr. Law Were deputed to select a suitable gramophone and to negotiate for the interchange of records. It- was resolved to accede to the request of Mr. W. IT. L. Roberts to erect a ticket collector’s Ikix at the side entrance to the Town Hall. Accounts amounting to £283 Is l Id were passed for payment.
