He added, in reference to the work done during the a ear, asi recorded by the engineer (Mr.'A. It was, he added, a record or the council during any one year since its formation, and proved the great amount of work needed andaetuilly done in the county. In addition to the cost of the materials, there had to be added the wages paid and the >enzine used in carrying the loads. They were actually effecting a saving »f thirty per cent, on work now done. For the coming year, continued the ■hairman, it would be necessary at iext meeting to strike the rates for the rear. Tiie council had to cater for an ever-growing and fast-travelling motor traffic, and they must have a'.l roads covered with bitumen. In some districts of the Dominion . where metal vas cheap they might continue renewing the roads, but in / a district like 3-outh Taranaki tarred roads were essential.
