WORKING HIS PASSAGE.
WELLINGTON BOXER UNDER DISADVANTAGE. (SPECIAL TO “THE STAR.”) \Y ELLI N GIVEN , May 4. Indignation is felt locally at the treatment of A. Clever ley, one of New Zealand’s boxing representatives at the Olympic Games, -by the captain of the liner Remuera. Oieverley, who had arranged to work liis passage to England before the Olympic Fund swelled to such proportions as to make a paid passage possible, elected to remain on the ship’s articles. By performing vigorous work below decks he hopes to keep his weight down to the welter-weight class instead of' light-heavyweight. When the Remuera’s commander was approached and asked to grant Gleverley facilities to train with Morgan, New Zealand’s other boxing representative, however, this was refused, the reason given being that Cleverley must- not mingle with the passengers. Learning of this decision another Xew Zealander who had decided to work his way to the Games and had ,>een placed on the ship’s articles, determined to pay his -passage.
