JUDGE GUARDED

BY ARMED DETECTIVES. HIS LIFE THREATENED OUTCOME OF GUTTERIDGE CASE. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) r ‘ (AUSTRALIAN PRESS ASSOCIATION—LONDON, April 30. Armed detectives 'have been appointed to watch Judge Avery as a precautionary measure. This is the outcome of a threatening letter following the death sentence passed on Kennedy. Usually such threats are disregarded. The authorities, however, attach importance to this one, owing to Kennedy’s notorious associates.

Mrs Kennedy says she is terribly shocked and has written to Judge Avory assuring him that she did not write' the letter and does not know the author, adding that although convinced that her husband did not shoot Constable Gutterklge, she was impressed by the judge’s scrupulous fairness. Both condemned men are appealing.
