'‘CHEVROLET” GANG IN COURT.

Members of the “iChcvrolet gang” whose criminal offences caused a, stir last year when they were busy converting motors to their own use and breaking and entering, appeared before Mr Justice iSini this morning for sentence.

The accused were Allan Ruben Barnett, William Henry Martin, John McGregor Wilson, Alfred Edward Arundalc. They were jointly charged with breaking and entering the shop of John. Nevis Allan Cameron on July 17, 1927, and stealing goods valued at £42 3s Od, the property of Cameron. After statements by counsel his Hon. our said that as far as Martin and Barnett were concerned it would be sufficient to sentence them to a term of reformative detention, which would ex. piro at the end of the sent/nees they were now serving. Barnett would be sentenced to five years’ reformative detention, to run concurrently with the five years he was now serving, and Martin would be sentenced to three years’ reformative detention, to be served concurrently with the three years he was now serving. In regard to Wilson his Honour thought the circumstances justified him in giving Wilson another chance. He would be released upon probation for a term of three years. The conditions would be that he took out a prohibition order and renewed it from time to time, and that hr pay £5 towards the costs of the prosecution. In regard to Arundalc, his Honour thought the best course would be to order a term in the Borstal Institute. He would be ordered to be detained in the Borstal for a term of three years. MTLTON STABBING AFFRAY. DUNEDIN, May 1. William Ilassett was charged in the Supreme Court this morning, with, on or about. April 15, attempting to murder Charles Arthur Lloyd. Accused Avas also charged with Avounding Lloyd Avith intent to cause bodily harm, Avith assaulting Lloyd and with causing actual bodily harm under such circumstances that if death had occurred he Avould have been guilty of manslaughter. Tie pleaded not. guitly. The eA’idence shoAved that the charges arose out. of a stabbing affray at Milton. Tt. AA-as alleged that Ilassett AA-as annoyed because Llovd had been paying attention to a certain young Avoman with AA'hom ho had formerly kept company. For the defence it AA’as argued that the stabbing had occurred accidentally during a souffle, between the tAvo men. The jury returned a verdict of guilty on the' charge of assault and the accused Avas remanded for sentence till Friday morning. In the meantime a report is to he obtained from the probation officer. SENTENCES AT DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, May 1. Prisoners sentenced at the criminal sitting of the .Supreme Court, AA-hich opened to-day, AA-oro: Albert* Foster Smelt, for forgery, two years’ imprisonment and declared an habitual criminal; James Simpson Thompson, for theft nf money, three years’ reformative treatment.
