THE SHOOTING SEASON.
OPENS TO-MORROW
PROSPECTS- EXCELLENT.
May the first brings round once more the day for which shooting sportsmen 100k 7 with keen interest and enthusiasm for it means the opening of the- season for game in this district. This year promises well, states the secretary of the Hawera Acclimatisation Society, perhaps the best that devotees of the gun and dog have had. Reports show that ducks are plentiful while the present conditions, duff weather, means that the birds will fly low rather than get away high in the air. as they do in bright- sunny weather.. News from various districts where ducks abound shows that numerous “posseys” or “maimais” as the Maoris call them, flax shelters behind which the sportsmen lie in readiness for the light, have been erected. On one lake at Kakaramca no less than seven have been built.
lii addition, all the parties will have their decoys out on the water —twentyfive are permitted in each hundred square yards—and it is pretty certain that good bags will be the order of the day.
The society, it may be added, has licenses on sale at Messrs Bennett and Sutton, and Blairs, Ltd., (Hawera), I. J. Bridger and J. D. McKay (Eltham). D. Roots and F. Locker (Patea), and at the stores throughout the countryside.
Setting out t 0 participate in the shooting season opening to-morrow. Messrs G. Larcom (Hawera), B. C. Gibson (Normanby), F. Vincent (Eltham), and Phillips (Mokoia) left by car this morning for the Ivawhia dis trict, Avhere game has been reported as being plentiful.
