ANZAC DAY.
OTHE KING’S MESSAGE. .BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION ] AUCKLAND. April 23. The Governor-General has been commanded by the King to commumieate to the people of New Zealand cm the occasion of Anzac Day the following message from His Majesty : “Oik this solemn day, consecrated to the memory of those who died so nobly •at Gallipoli, the thoughts of the Queen and mysc.'f are with my people of Australia and New Zealand, and onr 'hearts go out in sympathy to all who gave t iieir loved ones.DISTRICT COMMEMORATIONS. SERVICES AT ALL CENTRES. It is a remarkable fact that the romance of the great drama enacted on the. shores and heights of Gallipoli, which began on April 25, 1915, and which' the imagination and roused toe admiration of the civilised would, istill appeals to the people of these days in 1928, when the deeds of those gafilant men are seen through the mist of yeans, and the poignancy of grief ha® been mitigated by the merciful hand of time.
That it is good <to rein ember those heroes and to recall all that they accomplished and suffered ivs proved by the response always made by the people to the: joint 'services of commemoration on Anzac Day in various centres of the district, just as is done in eommuniticfe all over the British Empire.
The combined service at Hawera. will he hp'd at the Show Grounds 'at 10.30 a.m. to-morrow, when a. cordial invitation is issued, to the people generally, to join witlr veterans of the Great War and of the South African and other wars in.the service of memorial to the men who have .gone West for the hike of right, and in the cause of their country. The address will be delivered by the Rev. E. S. Em mitt, M.C., and the otner ministers of the town will take part. The Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pacoy) and the councillors will be present. A .special invitation i s issued to the public, and to members of local institutions to lav wreaths on the memorial arch, which was specially erected as a commemoration of the services rendered by men of the district. Manaia, Kaponga, EiVtham, Patea, and Opuna.ke will each have their own remembrance to keep and in each there will ,b- a tom billed .service.
At each sendee throughout the district territorials, returned soldiers _ and veterans. Boy Scouts' and Girl Guides, and pupils of the schools will parade, and at each the band, of the district will lead the singing and play appropriate ••elections.
The cooperation of all these units with the people generally will .serve to make a gathering fully worthy of the gn?at occasion.
