PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr W. S. Glenn, M.P., for R-angi-tikei, was a pasenger on tlie mail train passing through Hawera. thus morning on his way south after a visit to Auckland over the Easter vacation. Three well-known Taranaki sportsmen, Messrs Geo. Preece (Matapu), Ron. McLean and Archie Baylv, ol Hawera, left this morning by motor for Whanganui Island, Coromandel, where the party intend to indulge in a few days fishing. The voracious mako shark abounds in the vicinity of Whanganui Island and the party anticipate some great sport.

From seven applicants whose qualifications were considered by the Hawera High School Board of Managers last evening, Mr L. B. Newton, M.A., of Christchurch, was- selected lor appointment to the school staff in place of Mis-s Turner, who leaves for Hamilton at the end ol the term. From several further applicants Miss H. C. Thomson, B.Sc., of Nelson, was selected as- a new assistant. The newly appointed teachens are to commence duty on May 22. Mr O. L. Mullany/ of Wellington, who has been appointed stationniaster at Inglewood, Taranaki, was farewelled on Wednesday by the New Zealand Rugby Union’s Management Committee, of which he has been a member for the past five years. He has acted as a Hawke’s Bay delegate to the union for a number of years, and for some time was prominently connected with the Wellington Rugby Referees’ Association. Mr S. S. Dean (chairman) and other members paid tribute on Thursday to the service given by Mr Mullany during liis term on the parent body, and as a token of esteem he was presented with an enlarged group photograph of the committee. Best wishes for Mr Mullany’s future in the railway service were expressed with the hope that- he would return to Wellington at some future date and again hold a seat on the Rugby com trolling body. Mr Mullany thanked the members for their good wishes and for the assistance and encouragement he had at all times received from them in endeavouring to carry out his duties as a committeeman. It was .with regret that lie was severing his connection with such a fine band of Rugby enthusiasts.
