BRAVERY REWARDED.
GIRL RECEIVES HIGH AWARD. RESCUE OF BATHER FROM SHARK. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY .ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN PRESS ASSOCIATION.) SYDNEY, April 11. Miss Lucy Donaldson Fas been awarded the gold medial of the Royal Shipwreck Relief and Humane Society for her heroism when Mr A. E. Lane was attacked by a shark and fatally mauled on Apcil 4 near Newcastle. Miss Donaldson, who is 20 years of age, was bathing neaTby with a girl friend. She sent the latter for assistance while she herself hurried out to Mr Lane, 50 yards away. Miss Donaldson splashed the water as she neared him and the shark, frightened, disappeared. The girl found Mr Lane almost unconscious, and dragged him to the shore, where 'assistance ' was available. His right hand was bitten off and a large piece taken out of his left thigh, while his calf and shin bone showed marks of the shark’s teeth. It is believed Miss Donaldson is the first woman to be honoured with this gold medal.
