The weather was fine, but dull overhead, and owing to recent rain the 'outfield was heavy. However, the wicket was so good that when Lowry iron the toss he- elected to bat. Dempster and Mill’s being the . 0 opening pair against McNamee. Both [batsahen opened their a-ecouat. with nieely placed singles on either side of the wicket. They also shaped confidently against Blaekie, who -began trundling from the other end. . As time went -on it became evident that the wet ball did not suit the bowlers and Dempster got several loose ones sweetly away to leg. Oxenham relieved McNamee and in the last bail of the over missed Dempster ’« off stump by a whisker. MeNamee took Blaekie’s place at the top end. Mills became conspicuous for cutting o'f consistent brilliance, but the ball was not travclt ling fast over the mpist turf, the fieldsM men having ample time to save bount daries. Mills also distinguished himself by playing Oxenham to leg with well-timed strokes, and MicNamee was punished by Dempster, who pulled a full t Osser strongly to the- pickets. Southern Hawke’s Bay- entered upon its second innings, and with the score at 10 Wilder went with a brilliant catch by Donaldson, The second innings of the challengers only occupied an hour and a quarter. Following,Wilder’s dismissal, the wickets fell fairly quickly, Armistead being the only batsman able to reach double figures after the opening pair. MIDLANDS v. HIGH SCHOOL .SMALL FIRST INNINGS 7 .SCORE. The match for tihe premiership of Taranaki was begun this morning at New Plymouth, between the North and South leaders, Nenv Plymouth High School and Midlands, of Hawera. The weather conditions were ideal and the ground in fine order. McCarthy won the toss and he elected to bat. The wicket was fast. The position at the luncheon adjournment was that Midlands in the first innings had made 51, McCarthy (20) and Jennings (22) being the best scorers. Bowling: Fookes four for 22, Andrews four for 20, Ewart two for 0.
School were all out for 63; Ewart (10), Fookes (10) and extras (13) being the best, scorers. Bowling: Giblin six for 25, Ivinsella four for 25.
