ALPINE CLUB.
INITIAL TIUP TO-MOKBOW. To-morrow the member® of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club will make their first excursion, a climb to Fantliam s Peak having been arranged. Several large parties are climbing to the top. These will leave the hostel about 5.30 a.m., and plan to be back at the Peak by 1 p.m., where they will meet the other members for lunch and hold a meeting to choose a site for the proposed liut. There are several points of great importance attached to a climb of this nature. Those who have not been on the mountain before probably do not realise the coldness of the winds which are prevalent at this time of the year. Warm clothes are essential, not to wear while climbing, but to put on at the peak or during a spell. Each person should carry two cardigans or .sweaters, gloves, scarf, and wear thick woollen stockings or socks. Boots are also very important; they must be comfortable and strong, well nailed, and. have secure heels. Another point is the necessity of having a hearty breakfast before leaving Hawera, as it is a stiff climb to the peak. On the return % to the hostel Mrs. Murphy has kindly offered to provide afternoon, tea for all the members. In tlie near future the club hopes to provide itself with a, banner, which will be carried by the leader of each trip. This banner will be carried out in the colours of the club, and will probably be woiked with the badge and motto. The executive hopes members will take up with much keenness these fuist Competitions, which are being run to produce a motto and design lor the badge. All those members keen on photography* are reminded to bring their cameras; there will be competitions in this direction later on.
