BOARD OF GOVERNORS

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hawera High School Board was held last evening, thi3 following being present: Messrs R. S. Sage (chairman), J. W. Harding, Entwistle. J. B. Murdoch, W. Crompton, Bowman, J. C. Hobbs' and Mrs Harding. - . Mr Find-later represented the school, owing to the unavoidable absence of !Vsr Gray (headmaster). HEADMASTER’S REPORT. In his monthly report to the board, the headmaster stated, that the numbers now on the roll are: — Literary, 122; commercial, 129; home science, 28; agriculture, 16; engineering, 46; total, 341. Desks for the new room weqe ready to come in this week. The boys were in camp on tlie Showgrounds from 13th to 17tn February. The- Defence Department was to be congratulated on the thorougiineiss of its preparations, and the camp was a very great success. The boys’ and gilds’ .swimming sports have been held. Again the .school is indebted to Mr Dowdle, caretaker 'of the baths, for his courtesy and help during the swimming season. A iswiifintilig pool at tlie school would he a great boon. Owing to the in crease in numbers, the. school has become entitled to. .a further teacher and the position lias been duly advertised. A slight additional number would entitle, it to still another instructor. Miss Garnett has been approved by the ttepArtment as temporary teacher of general subjects, and has been recommended -as part-time drawing instructress. Some equipment for office .instruction to the commercial classes has been purchased, and two makes of adding maehiniis are submitted for the board -s selection. , ~ The work of re-modelling 'the paths and the area- between the school buildings was authorised, and tenders are to be called for the work. Messrs Sage and Hobbs were appointed as a subcommittee in connection with tne work, with power to act. Hi was decided, on tlie advice or the acting-secretary:, to purchase office equipment, also- an adding machine for the commercial room. A (long discussion re free t places tor several pupils' who are now attending tlv school took place. Mr Sage dealing at considerable length with correspondence from the Education Department, the matter being, finally deferred, to the next meriting.
