NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By “Maecenas.”) Kiihurn did not show his true form at Bulls, but may do better later on. The maiden runners seen, in action at the recent meeting of the Rangitikei Racing Club could not he described as a good lot. Fee Simple is somewhat brilliant, but at present it does not appear as if he will develop into anything but a moderate performer. Fresh from his success at Napier Park, Tanagra looked well at Bulls. He was not favoured with a good run, but, allowing for this, his performance was not his best.

Partaga looked well at Bulls, but he appeared to be a trifle lucky to win on Wednesday. Oration finished particularly well over seven lurlongs at the Rangitikei meeting, and on the showing should be worth remembering for races run over that, distance. Whenuanui showed a return to form at Bulls on Wednesday, and it was only in the last tew yards that Ituanui got the best of him. L. G. Morris put plenty or vigour into his riding of Ruanui, a feature that went far towards victory.

Hipo, now in his ninth year, is still capable of paying dividends in second class company. He finished well to beat Vivo at the Rangitikei meeting. Oration finished better than any oi his opponents at Bulls on Wednesday. He was made favourite on Thursday, but was too sore to show his true form.

After her good showing at Napier Park it .was expected that Modern would run well in the hurdle race at Bulls on Wednesday. Modern lost s-oiuo ground through hesitation at .her jumps, but when more seasoned will pay her way over fences. For a beginner over hurdles, Ikmliomine went two good races at tlio recent llangitikei meeting, and one seems sale in stating that Bonhomme will win hack hurdle events this season.

With his good form at Trentham to guide bettors, Mendip was made an “odds on” favourite for the Ngatiapa Hack Handicap last Wednesday. By his ill manners ho lost a lot of condition before the barrier rose, but lie jumped out really well and won very nicely. Vast Acre began brilliantly with her 9.2 at Bulls last Wednesday, but just before reaching the straight ran wide' at the same time carrying Miss Pat with her. The rider of Partaga took advantage of the opening, gaining several lengths and winning. The Rangitikei Racing Club can be counted amongst the lucky ones of the Dominion, for although somewhat isolated, the club managed to show a slight profit on its meetings. Lady Desmond looked well and behaved much better than usual prior to the recently run Rangitikei Cup. She had a nice run throughout, and over the final stages was going better than any other starter. Taking all in all, Lady Desmond’s showing on Wednesday was a good trial for; the Great Autumn Handicap. Track frequenters know that Vivo is a great worker in private, hut just as often fails in her races, with, disastrous results to her followers. She worked well at Bulls on Wednesday, and stripped well for her Cup engagement. Vivo set a solid pace for the first seven furlongs. Her rider then gave her a spell, with the result that over the final stages Vivo ran on much better than generally expected. -
