The Hon. O. J. Hawken who journeyed from Wellington and addressed a meeting at Otakeho last evening returned, accompanied by his secretary, Air. W. J. Shanley, to Wellington to-day. Captain G. L. Stedman, . N.Z. Air Force, 1 left Hawera by the south annual refresher course at the Sockexpress this morning to attend the burn aerodrome.
The election for the Mayoralty at Gisborne caused by the death of Air C. Fi. Armstrong, resulted in the return of Mr D- W. Coleman (Labour), with 1760 votes, who beat Mr J. B air, cteputy-Mayor (citizens-’ candidate), who polled 1737 votes, and Mr A. Wade (Citizens’ candidate), 951 votes. Archbishop O’Shea, Rev. Dr. McRae and Father Walsh, who have been in Hawera for the past week, in connection with the foundation stone ceremony of St. Joseph’s Church, leftby car this morning on their return to Wellington. Mr. R. A. G. Fowke, formerly attached to the Railway staff at Wellington, lias arrived- in Hawera and on Monday will take up his new appointment as stationm-aster. During the past 10 days Mr. T. H. Tuohy has teen relieving stationmaster in place Mr. E. P. Beauchamp, who lias teen confined to hos-pital.
