MANAIA TOWN DRAINAGE

APPLICATION FOR LOAN

MINISTER'S SUPPORT GIVEN

Consent to. a request that he give any support possible to an application being inaue by me Manaia Town Board for nuance to complete the town drainage scheme was given by the Hon. O. J. Haw Ken, iVlinister qL Agriculture, who, as the member for the district, was waited upon by a deputation after his address on rural credits at Otakeho last evening. The deputation consisted or Commissioners hi. O. limes (chairman of the town hoard), V. H. Hobday, J. Hickey, A. Al. Hannah, and Air. W. J. Badley (town clerk). It was explained that in 1921 a loan of £33,(XX) for water and drainage works in the town had been sanctioned by the ratepayers. Already £26,000 had been expended in completing the water supply plans and on the drainage works. The latter could be completed for another £SOOO, making the. cost of the whole £31,000 instead of £36,000 as originally provided-, but the work had been at a standstill for some time owing to the difficulty of the board in obtaining tlie £SOOO required. On ap- ' plication for the amount was now being made to the Public Trustee and it was in this connection that the support of Air. Hawken was sought. . ■ “At Opunake they have thrown fifty or sixty thousand pounds into the sea, but we cannot get £SOOO to complete a very necessary work,” said Or. Innes. Answering a question as to whether the board’s application would have to go before the Local Bodies Loans Board, Air. Hawken gave the opinion that as the loan had been sanctioned before the board came into operation that procedure would probably not be necessary. He expressed his appreciation of the necessity for the work and promised to take the matter up with the Public Trustee and do what he could to further the application. He suggested, in the event of it being unsuccessful, that an endeavour be made to get ’the money privately.
