AUCKLANDERS DEFEATED.

AUSTRALIANS AVIN BY AN INNINGS AND 40 RUNS. [BY telegraph—PßESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, March 12. The match between the Australian cricket team and the Auckland representative side was concluded at Eden Park to-day, the. visitors winning, by an innings and 40 runs. The Australians bad made 431 in the first innings, and Auckland had replied, with 171. Following on last Saturday. Auckland had lost no wickets for 20 runs. Continuing to-day, Auckland were dismissed] for 220. Langrige followed up his first, innings success by contributing a very solid 78. As in the first innings he was not troubled with Grimmett, and faced the slow bowler with the great*,est confidence, hut eventually he fell a victim to this wily trundler. Postles played a good innings for 49, hut ran himself out in a most risky manner. Grimmett, who did' not meet- with much success in the first innings, bowled exceptionally well to-day, and secured seven wickets for 91 runs. Ho bowled 43 overs in the innings, including 13 maidens. McNamee, . who bowled on Saturday, failed' to reproduce his good form. Although he bowled very well, be failed to get the nip off the wicket which was so evident on Sattirday. The conditions were again ideal, and there was an attendance of about 2000. . The gate takings for the three days were £538 12s. The scores are: AUSTRALIA. First Innings 431 AUCKLAND. The event of the year in cricket circles' in this province will be the visit of the famous Australian team to Taranaki, when to-morrow and Tburs- • day they will play the pick of the province at New Plymouth. It will be a great privilege to see these world-renowned players l in action, and this is certain to draw a large crowd on both days. The team is largely a test combination, ancl batting, bowling and fielding of the highest standard will delight all who are able to be, present.
