ELTHAM DAIRY FACTORY.
FIGURES FOR SEASON
NEW PRODUCT FROM WHEY
The total amount of butter-fat received by the Eltham Dairy Company for February was 233,1461 b., being a decrease compared with the same month last year, but there is still an increase of .78 per cent, in fat for the period July to the end of February, States the Eltham correspondent qf the “'Taranaki Herald.”
The company’s pay-out for February will be Is 6d for fat for cheese-making and Is 5d for butter, with a supplementary pay-out qf 2d per lb. for clieese-making during December and January, bringing the advance on but-ter-fat for cheese during the season to Is 6d.■ Experiments in the utilisation of whey have been carried out for a long time by Mr. Charles Cooper, of the Commercial D l airy Company, who announces that he has succeeded in manufacturing a product from whey in the form of a powder which is calculated to be of great value as a food for pigs, poultry and cattle, while, prepared in a suitable manner, it is suitable for human consumption. Air. Cooper estimates that as food for animals it can be produced and placed on the market at the same price; as pollard, but the nutritive value of whey powder would twice that of pollard.
The Eltham Dairy Company turn out 2000 tons of cheese per annum, and the whey powder would amount to the same total, from which will be seen that the combined output from the dairy factories in the Dominion would produce an enormous quantity of valuable good lor animals and keep many thousands of pounds sterling in the country. Air. Cooper has done sufficient manufacturing to give him every confidence that he has produced a food of considerable value, and that can be turned out on a large scale at a price to place it well within fhe reach of farmers.
