HOTEL DESTROYED BY FIRE
[BY TELEGRAPH—PRE-Sg ASSOCIATION.] GREYMIOUTH, March 10. The Dunollie Hotel was destroyed by fire last night. The outbreak, it is believed. originated in the bedroom by a cigarette stump being dropped on to the floor. No water supply was available. Tire building was owned by Kettle. Bros, and Mandles Ltd-, the licensee being Mr E. Hawkens GIFT OF ART GALLERY. OiITRIST.OHURCH, March 10. Mr R. E. MciDougall, a well-known •citizen and principal of the Arm of Aulsebrooks and 'Go., has informed the Mayor that he proposes ito present an art gallery 'to the -city, the estimated cost of which is £23,000, but more would 'be available if it were required. The only condition is thait the -city presents a suitable site. HOUSE BURNT AT ASHBURTON. ' ASHBURTON, March 10. An eight-roomed house in Seafield Road, owned by Mr. John McElhinney and occupied by Mr. T. Brennen, was burnt down last night. The fire had a good hold when it was discovered. Difficulty was experienced in saving five children. It was insured* for £640. A MYSTERIOUS EXPLOSION. CHRISTCHURCH, March 10. As the result of a tremendous explosion at the rear of an unoccupied' cottage in Moorehouse Avenue, the back portion of the building was completely wrecked at 10.30 o’clock last night. Several windows in a wool store of Messrs. Pyne, Gould and Guinness, which is alongside, were destroyed. The cause is a mystery, though it is believed that some kind of a charge was set off by a fuse*. A MOTOR COLLISION. GISBORNE. March 10. Advice lias been received by Poice Inspector O’HaVjoran of a serious motor collision which occurred last evening at Opotiki. resulting in injuries to a Maori From; the meagre details available' it appears that the Maori was _ driving a lorry when it came into collision with a ca.r driven by a nakeha. The native suffered seriously, his injuries npeessitating liis (removal to a hospital, where condition was found to he grave. In connection with the accident, the c.-’ic.e have arrested the driver of the other car. who was charged with 'Being intoxicated while in charge of the car. The name was not disclosed.
PARNELL BATHS. AUCKLAND- March 10. On a comolnint made by the Health Department! alleging insanitary conditions at the Parnell swimming baths, a large popular swimming resort on tlie harbour, the City Council lias closed the baths.
