There is at least one man in Auckland who cannot lay claim to be strong in remembering dates (says the “Star"). Of middle age and of the artisan type, he was called as a witness in the Magistrate’s Court to give evidence m respect of a property dispute. He said that a certain transaction took place before the war. “When was that?" asked cross-examin-ing counsel. "I don’t know,” was the. huonic and rather astonishing reply, in a. further effort to fix the date and t.» stimulate the mental processes ot the witness, counsel asked : “l)o you know when the Great War started?" Again came the almost unbelievable reply in the negative. A. motor ’bus was shipped at A.uckand by the steamer Hinemoa for Norfolk* Island, where the residents are awaiting its arrival with feelings if keen anticipation. Just u short time ago the first motor-car made its ippearance at the- island, and as .•very horse and goat bolted on sighing it, special restrictions had to be niposed, one being that a prior anlouncement of any proposed journey las to be made. Since then a. Norfolk Island motor fleet has grown slowly. The ’bus is to be used for ,-onveying tourists round the island, ind on race day—the big annual ivent on the island—it will probably je in keen demand to conevy the residents to aiVl from the course.
