CONDITIONS AT TRENTHAM

NEW ZEALAND TEAM CHOSEN

(by telegraph—press association.) TRENTHAM, Feb. 27.

The ranges were in a sodden condition to-day. There was heavy rain throughout the night, and this stopped at 9 o’clock this morning, when the men were squadded preparatory to the Wellington Match. Consequently there were no Tesults till the alternoon. A progress report of the leading ten in the Australian optional aggregate, scores in the Beit matches counting, is as follows: H. Hunt (Suburbs) 434, H. Feast (Greytown) 432, W. 'West (Renwick) 432, F. Cliing (Karori) 431, J Paterson (Wanganui) 431, E. King (Wanganui 429, C. Nix (Featherston.) 429, A. O’>onnell (Petone) 428, F. James (Napier) 428, L. Benton (Featherston) 428. The position of the leading ten teams competing in the rifle club champion teams match, open to teams of five from any defence club in New Zealand, is- as follows, all scores in the Belt matches counting except the final ten Shots ; Petone No. 1, 1109; Fcatherston, 1096; ’Wanganui A, 1091; Suburbs No. 1. 1087; Christchurch No. 1, 1085; Linton A, 1083; Karori No. 1, 1079; Greytown, 1076; Petone No, 2, 1063; Ashburton, 1061. Last year the match was won by Petone No. 1 with an aggregate score of 2310.

The following New Zealand team vvas chosen to compete for the Gordon Highlanders’ trophy against the Australians : H. Marshall (Karori), captain, H. Simmonds (Paeroa), F. Soler (Wanganui), F. Jeune (Gisborne), J. James (Napier), R. Hester (Suburbs), E Ballinger (Petone), F. Hood (Featlierston), H. Hunt (Suburbs). It is now raining and shooting conditions are unpleasant, sighting being difficult.
