LATE THOMAS HARDY.
TERMS OF 1-11 S WILL. RY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received II a.m. to-day. LONDON, Feb. 26. Tlie “Daily Mail”, states that the novelist Thomas Hardy left £91,000. The will requests that a complete edition of the poems will he published at a price within the reach of the poorer readers and bequesting half the residuary to a trust for the first Wessex University established; if one is not established within five years of his wife’s death, the bequest passes to Magdalene College, Cambridge. The remainder is left in trust to his widow, Hardy’s brother and .sister, after -bequests to- charity and the relatives.— “Sydney Sun” cable. An earlier cable message states:
Mr Thomas Hardy was much wealthier than was anticipated. In his will dated August 24,1922, lie left unpublished manuscripts and correspondence to his literary executors who are his wife and Sydney Conkerill, of the F'itzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, giving them power to dispose of them without injury to any persons of character. Mr Hardy left £SO to the pension fund of the London Society of Authors and £SO each to tlie Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to- Animals and the Council of Justice for Animals with a view to lessening the sufferings of animals in transit to homes and slaughter houses. A few gifts of books and portraits have been made to galleries and friends; otherwise the estate goes to his wife, brothers and sisters.
