NOTES AND COMMENTS.
(By ‘Maecenas.”)
That once good miler Centrepiece is in a had Yvay, and it is on the cards that he will have to be destroyed.
Carrying half a. stone overweight ,8.2) Eka rgn we 11 enough at Wanganui to suggest a win in the near future. Trainer F. D. Jones intends leaving for Australia on Alarch 2. Fie YY’ill take Limerick and Zaragosa Yvith him. Limerick is somewhat lighter in condition than hLs trainer likes.
In these days of limited or small fields it is refreshing to find a club like AVoodville receiving such excellent acceptances for their autumn meeting, which opens , to-morrow and concludes on Saturday. Opposed by a. very, moderate lot of jumpers, Polyphemus has an excellent chance of earning some stake money in the Oringi Hurdles at AVoodY’ille tomorroYV.
Like the majority of races confined to maidens run during the current season, the Trial Plate to be run tomorroYV at AYoodville is Yvealc in class, so Shining Star, Yvho has disappointed more than once, may make amends. Timi Jnihi is another that has flattered bis l'olloYvers and may cause most bother to Shining Star. A particularly good field both in class and numbers appears in the AVoodville Cup, and a good contest should cY'entuate. Joy Bird yvoh nicely last Saturday, and is well, lint not being built oil very big lines may be troubled by the higher scale of Yv’eiglits. A trio that should run well are Bennanoc, Lady l.imoiul, and DaY’id Garrick. Despite liis load of 9.8 Crown Area will have a big foUoiving in the Ruahino Handicap, but at * the YY’eiglits Royal Ceres (8.1) looks certain to be dangerous. The hacks engaged in the County Handicap cannot be described as good, so- lightYveights m Dreamy, Lo Champ and Moa Bird may show up in the final stages. Tea Miss is very Yvell just now, and if produced for the Sapling Stakes is sure to run YY r ell. A pair of. lightYi’eiglits in Aloorgas and Australis may be equal to providing a- good contest. Considering the value of the prizes, the President’s Handicap lias drawn a big and fair class field. If produced Duke Abbey will be very much fancied while Willow AVai may also have a foUoiving. In the early days of liis racing career, Talislcer* had a good reputation, which, however, has not been fulfilled. As the field opposing him in the Victoria, Handicap at Woodville is Yveak Talisker may prevail. Sandburr recently won a, “double” on the East Const, and being Yvell may fully extend Talisker. Tresham. yy’lio is now under the. eare of T. F. Quinlivan will make his reappearance at AYoodville t-o-morroYv after a short- “let up.” He has been galloping well and be may be- worth considering on the second day of 1 the meeting. As a rule the stock of Absurd does not race well with age, but Shirley appears to be an exception, and on Saturday last at Wanganui she looked and raced, as well as ever.
HAWERA TRACK NOTES (By “Limited.”) All our local trainers ha\ r e horses nominated for the Opunake meeting on March 17 and judging from the list of entrants. Haiv-era trained horses promise to play an important part in the deciding of the events. At the track this morning there YY’as not much- fast galloping, the majority of the horses being given halt pace work. C. Jackson sent A T ivo and Partaga a good half mile in 49 1-osec, whilst Benzora did strong pace Yvork. Reremoana trotted and cantered a couple of circuits. The two-year-old Kaha and Pink Rose did half pace work. Bisox and Silvermine Yvorked a mile together at a good sound mine has not shaken off all signs of soreness yet. R. Brough worked his two-year-olds Egeria and Ooolmint oyer tYY’o and threefurlongs respectively. E’geria ran her tYY’o* in 26sec and Coolmint three in 39 1-osec, and it is intended tq give both youngsters a run at Opunake. Black Odin, having contracted a slight cold, has not been galloped for a day or tYvo, but was out exercising. San Fera and Glengariff both did strong pace Yvork and should be much improved horses for Opunake. J. Brown has started on Silver Rule again and from uioyv on this filly will have to work more strenuously. She is a sluggish YY'orkcr and has to be ridden hard in her track tasks. J. Fryer’s team Yvcro all given easy pace Yvork, trotting and cantering. This trainer-has got Lady Anstruther in Yvork again after a brief spell. Lady Anstruther slioyvs to best advantage on the soft tracks and may be useful later on. Royal Acre and Mountain Bell Yvere only asked to- go* at half pace. 111. Brough has sent The Lamb out to his OYVber’is place* Yvhere Iris injured leg Yvill ho blistered and attended to. Lady Desmond, looking quite on the big side, yvus out pottering round. J. Fryer leaY’es to-day l'or AVoodville with Blue Peter. Blue Peter is engaged in the hurdle races and as on the first day the* opposition is not at all strong he should gWe a good account of himself.
