MOTOR CYCLE RACING
HAWERA CLUB FIXTURE. GOOD MEETING ON RACECOURSE. SOME FAST RACING. The annual meeting of the Hawera • Motor Cycle Club took place yesterday in ideal weather. There were riders from all over the North Island, competing. The preparatory work had occupied a great deal of time of the committee under the energetic supervision of the president (Mr. IV. IV. Davy) and the secretary (Mr. IV. G. IValkley), and so well had this been carried out that all arrangements for' the conduct of the sports worked efficiently and smootlxly, with the result that all events were got off expeditiously .and to the satisfaction of .the large attendance of the public, whose interest was not allowed to flag, being treated to a day of first-class, thrilling sport. The gate-tal tings were very satisfactory, amounting to £250, this being just £SO less than the amount taken at the New Plymouth sports. The caretaker of the course, Mr A. Morse, had the track prepared in a tip-top con dition and the competitors spoke highly of its riding qualities. Only one accident marred, the day. when the Hawke’s Bay rider, J. Arnot.t, was thrown from his machine and upon at tent ion from Dr. R.. G. R. Sinclair it was found lie had sustained a broken nose. Arnott competed later in the day, and so showed the remarkable pluck which characterised the riders. Coleman was unfortunate in not securing other than third places, his handicap being lso> given as to make close finishes. The Municipal Band rendered selections during the day. Managlr led for five laps, but Allen overhauled him and held first place for | th',3 remaining four laps. Herbert came up> to second place in the seventh and hold his place also. This left twelve for the race. Morgan held the lead for four laps, hut was l overhauled by Vickers, who- field on to 'first place, and won easily. Time, 7min. 56 l-ssec. SCRATCH INVITATION R ACE', eight laps. Gold medal presented by Lighthand and Waun, New Plymouth. W. Allen (Wellington), Norton ... 1 D. O. Managh (Halcombe), New Hudson 2 H. J. Putt (O'takeho), Norton 3 Also started: R. Ranby (Te Aroha), Indian; W. H. Herbert (Otahuhu), Indian; J. Rl. Arnott (Hawke’s Bay), Ariel. This race created much interest. McCready on a stock model Harley-Dav-idson, was pace-maker for one Jap and a fine rolling start was given first time round. In the fourth lap Arnott drew out and Ranby came out of the race in the sixth lap. The winner won by about 30 yards, with Putt 150 yards further back. Time, 7.11 3-5.
