STATE AND CHURCH.
CONFLICT IN MEXICO. INSURRECTION RIFE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. MEXICO CITY, Jan. 27. A renewed conflict between State and Church in Mexico was indicated bv insurrectionary aetivties in several States. Rigorous military precautions have been taken, along with wholesale arrests of Roman Catholics in the capital and other large cities. The Government charges, the prisoners with having plotted against the State. Suggestions that President Calles and Archbishop Guadalajara should meet and seek a compromise have not yet been approved bv either camp. Jt is said that the hierarchy will hold out indefinitely in the hope that the Government will come, to terms through the force of public opinion. The Government, on the other hand, insists upon the. acceptance of the laws, especially the registration of priests with the municipal authorities, which the Roman Catholics argue would, give the control of priesthood to the State.
