NOTES ON THE TROTTERS
(By 1 ‘Escapade. ’’)
Handicaps appeared this week for Hastings. The fields arc not extra large. Hawera horses are well represented Louie Dillon and Sonoma Bell -are- in the Novice and it looks as is Sonoma Bell hasi a good chance of success. It is certain she will be favourite.
The trotters’ classes are. small, hut all the horses can trot fairly well. Makanna will see a- short price even chough he is sore. Tui Bells looks to- have quite an excellent chance of success in the two miles. It would be a very popular win as she is owned in Hawera.
Bonnie wall, Mr. fine filly by Peterwah, has speed and can stay. She and Halgana. will probably dill the places in the Clive Handicap. The Hawke’s Bay Cup will be a good race. Condition of the candidates will be a big factor. Explosion, if lie has improved -since Christmas, will have a chance.
Dillon Huon and Uramie have paid dearly for their second performances. It would not surprise if neither made the journey. Derby Lynn is nicely Treated on 24 yards in the Napier Handicap. Sailor Boy will have a chance- to redeem himself in the' Novice at Hawke’s Bay- . _ The sale of Dillon Huon, Queen Elizabeth and Hostess fell through. It is rumoured the purchaser did not want Hostess.
Otahuhu programme will suit a number of Taranaki horses.
The Manawatu programme is out. also.
Christchurch people are very keen about the match between Great Bingen and Native Chief. Personally, I think Native Chief may win as Great Bingen will not be at his best. He was very sick and sore at Auckland at Christmas.
The owners of Peter Maiming,, America’s champion trotter, are not prepared to bring him to Now Zealand. Jewell Pointer, Auckland’s crack pacer is nominated for Dunedin. The handicapper has taken no chalices with him.
Two ex-North Island trotters, Native Star and Petroleuse, are nominated for Dunedin.
The Hawera Trotting Club- are getting wonderful praise for their programme. The meeting is sure to be successful as owners all over New Zealand arc keeping horses for the cup, it being the only 4.42 race worth .6GOO in New Zealand.
The Hawera caretaker, Mr. Morse, lias the course in great order lor coming .races. He has also had the trolling track done up. The fence is almost complete and already a benefit is being derived.
