CROSSING FATALITY.

The circumstances surrounding _ the death of Andrew Poroival Guthrie, a victim of the railway collision at Longburn at the Rongotea. Road crossing on January 8, were inquired into this morning. The evidence of the engine-driver was to the effect that he noticed deceased’s van running on the road paral'ol with the 1-ine three chains from the crossing. Witness soimdrd the second alarm whistle, but deceased did not take any notice. The van then turned acros-s the line. The- deceased had never given any indication of his intention to to so. The train then struck the van. Witness was of opinion that deceased had a clear view of the line. Another witness said that deceased applied his brakes and the van stopped in the lino where it was struck by the train. Had the brakes not been a-p----'l:ed the collision would not have occurred.
The verdict was. that deceased was accidentally killed through his van colliding with a train at a- -railway dossing. The danger of railway crossings was commented upon by the coroner.
