CROQUET.
THE KAPONGA CLUB
In recent club games Airs. A. J. Hawkins won the Vincent Button and Alls. R. E. Williams became the possessor of the Tait Button.
On Thursday next eight members of the club will journey to Eltharn to play an inter-club game, and on the following Saturday Alesdames Tait, Brewer, Eotlie and Hawkins intend p.aymg at Patea. On Tuesday last a doubles tournament for the' Egmont Buttons resulted in a w.n lor Alesdames Rothe and Tattersali.
The present visit to Kaponga of Air. and Airs. R. W. Littlejohn, of Palmeiston North, has created a revival of interest in the game among the local ladies. The visitors are expert exponents, and an exhibition game played •by them on Thursday served to demonstrate a wealth of lawn craft. Even to the uninitiated, the endless variety of strokes piayed to secure position, and the- accuracy displayed by the demonstrators', was a revelation. They compiled breaks with the ease and confidence of finished billiardists. The visitors are highly delighted with the local lawns, comparing them . avou-ablv with those of Palmerston North, which are classed among the best (if not the best) in the North Island. In Air. Littlejohn’s opinion *he Ivaponga lawns are a credit to the club and to the custodian (Air. A. J. Herbert), combining with the bowling green and the tennis courts in imparting to the little mountain town quite an air of importance in a sporting sense, or rather adding to its existing importance -as the seat of the great annual r,even-a-side Rugby tournament.
