ATTEMPT ON GIBRALTAR STRAITS.

Miss Gleitz commenced a swim to Gibraltar, but owing to the cold wind and choppy sea gave up the attempt after swimming 28 miles. Miss Gleitz was in the water for 12 hours and was a mile from the shore when the wind sprang up with a c h°PP7 sea and intense cold. vJontraTy to the current the swimmer battled gamely and wanted to continue, but was induced to abandon the attempt. Crowds on the Spanish and Gibraltar coasts sighted the swimmer and were confident she would achieve success. They made arrangements for her landing at Tarifa, where a motor-ear was waiting to convey her to Gibraltar. She experienced no difficulty with the current elsewhere in the straits. Miss Gleitz entered a tug and sailed for Tangier. She announces that she will return to Gibraltar with the intention of immediately swimming the other way. ANOTHER ATTEMPT FAILS. GIBRALTAR, Jam 2. Fishermen have reported that Hudson abandoned an attempt to swim, the straits at nine o’clock. ' LONDON, Jan. 3. Hudson gave up the attempt to swim the Straits of Gibraltar four and a half miles from Aarifa, after swimming for eight and a half hours.
