Adjutant Brown, of the Salvation Army, Hawera, has been transferred to Petone, while Adjutant Campion, of Eltham, is to take his place in Hawera.
Mr. A. W. Morrison, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Morrison, of Hawera, was successful in passing the .second section of the B.A. degree at the recent university examinations.
Mr. J. Robertson, Dominion secretary of the Motion Picture Exhibitors Association, was a visitor to Hawera over the Christmas week-end as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Simpson. He left for Wellington, this morning.
Mr. W. P. Russell, of Wellington, who has been on a visit to Taranaki to officiate as judge at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting, left Hawera for Wanganui this morning. He proceeds to Palmerston North tomorrow, and will return to Hawera at the end of the week.
The. death is reported of Mr. William Stonham Short, 1.5.0., of Epsom, aged 75 years. He had been ailing since the death of his wife in September last, and had been compelled to return home from a South Island visit through indisposition. He had had a long and distinguished service in the Public Works Department, having joined the service in 1874, and retiring as Under-Secretary in 1920. The Companionship of the Imperial Service Oi’der bad been conferred on him in 1919. On bis retirement he made bis home in Auckland, since when and during his term of office he had often acted as commissioner in the holding of inquiries, for which his long official experience specially qualified him. There are four .sons, Mr. W. L. Short and Mr. G. S. Short, of Auckland, Dr. T. G- Short, of Waihi, and Major J. L. Short, of London, and two daughters. Mrs. O. H. Poole, of Auckland, and Mrs. N. C. Bray, of Frankton Junction. A fifth son. Private Leslie Short, was killed at Gallipoli, and another, Major A. V. Short, died during the influenza epidemic after the war.
