(By ‘ ‘ Esca pa tie. ’ ’) Wellington meeting was quite a success and some fine racing was witnessed. Silk Thread won the Oold Cup nicely from Logan Park, and Native Star won the two mile trot very comfortably. Vestas is the best three-year-old we have had in New Zealand for some time. He is sure to go 4.30 with, a good run. Ahuriri had two races at Wellington and •went very disappointingly each start, though a stable mate won the Maiden very easily. Hue Ooronado, the Waverley horse, ran very nice races and should soon get a good stake. The Northlands meeting caused some interest in Taranaki’s Call Boy, who was hailed a good one after winning from an extra weak field at 'Hamilton, started twice, was favourite on each occasion, but was easily beaten. Explosion, recently sold by Mr. J. R. Corrigan for £IOOO, soon returned some of his purchase money for Mir Moodabe. When J. Shaw let him go three furlongs from the winning post the race was all over. He won easing up. ’■Gold Dial, winner of the Northlands Cup, is a very consistant mare and one likely to win more races.

Jack Sliaw is having a -wonderful run. Besides .winning with Explosion he also won with ißingen King. The Auckland 'Cup is causing a lot of discussion. Machine Gun is favourite. Tom Thumb, Kohara, Jewel Pointer, and Cardinal Logan-are all -well in the boom.

Peter Riddle is bringing Shrek for the cup, Happy Rosa for the Rowe 'Cup and Native Prince from Australia.

A number of Hawera horses are preparing for Auckland and Wairarapa at Christmas.

Last year Hawera horses had a successful time at the latter meeting. 'Sister Beatrice won the Wairarapa Cup last year. This year the cx-Ha-wera horse Kevin Brae looks to have bright prospects. He is in a very capable trainer and driver’s hands. In Derby Lynn, TTio same owner '(Mr. Mitchell), has a very well spoken of maiden.

The trotting track is in nice order at present, but the sheep cause a lot of trouble by running in front of horses while working. The programme of the Hawera club’s fourteenth annual meeting to be held on April 7 and 0 was published this week and handsome prize money is again offered, the stakes totalling £4030. The cup race of the first day is worth £6OO and in the second day the good stakes of £450 is offered for the Plains Handicap. In six other of the 16 events prizes of £230 each are carded and all the remainder are of £2OO each. Nominations close on Priday, March 16.
