NOTES AND COMMENTS. (Ry “Maecenas.”) Southerners generally agree that Footfall is a better gelding as the result of a short spell. Oil track work it would appear that Rlapier is not at his best, but it is worth remembering that Rapier is aiways a lazy worker. Count Oaivour was not forward enough at the spring meeting qf the Canterbury Jockey Club, do do himself justice, but judging by his track work be will, strip much fitter for the Auckland cup and as he meets Rapier on 11 lb better terms, he should at least beat the New Zealand Cup winner. Hiorses trained in the Auckland province are going to infuse interest into the Taranaki holiday racing. The Australian bred Lausanne, who is brilliant hut very unreliable, has been nominated for the Wiai ra/rapa Cup which event is run over a ten furlong course.

tS/baghuliter, who has won in two of hksi three starts, is to take his place in the Fbal Stakes field at the Auckand meeting, and his owner is .sanguine that he will give Chiidsplay a. good race. R. MefPavish is to ride him.

There will not be any race meetings in tills Dominion, next week, but will be well balanced by tlie largo number dated the week following. Gascony continues lo gallop well, and lie will fully test his opponents in the Railway Handicap on Boxing Day. Mr W. G. Stead’s team have been working at VVoodville since the meeting held there lately. Some of those' who have watched Riidgemount work, are disappointed with this youngster and give him little or no clrarice with Ohildspla.y at Elllerslie. Rapine has made a good recovery from his mishap and it is intended to race him again. He is eight years old, but the Martians wear well.

, Last season Pcgaway showed form of tike host ,-b'Uit so liar this season has not reproduced the same. He is freely engaged at tho coining Auckland meeting and may again give ; hi.s supporters plenty to enthmse over. Niow that the handiiiciaps have been disclosed, for the various holiday meetings, .students ciif .form, owners, train - cm and the sporting public have plenty over which to exorcise their minds. While tho Auckland mooting excites most notice, meetings hold in our own province and the Maniawatu meeting are of more than passing interest. While many racing clubs have been forced to' reduce their stake money to practically pre-war dimension, it is unfortunate fo.r horse owners that the cost of training and transport;' cannot be reduced in proportion. With this in one’s mind it is refreshing to find the Egmont Racing Club producing a capital programme for their summer meeting, which takes place in February next. This includes the Egmont Oup of 700 sovs, the Nolan Gold Cup (for backs) of 350 sovs., and the Flying of 300 sovs., on the first day and the Tonics Memorial of 400 sovs. on the second clay.
