PERSONAL ITEMS.
Colonel Claud Weston, of New Flymouth, was in Hawera to-day. Mr. X. R. McKenzie, senior inspector of Taranaki schools, is expected to arrive on a visit to Hawera. to-day, and will be staving at the Egmont Hotel. Mr. F. J. Swindell, of Palmerston North, is on a holiday visit to Hawera. He is staying at the Central Hotel. Mr. A. B. Collins, of Wanganui, arrived on a visit to Hawera. yesterday, and was among the guests at the Egmont Hotel last evening. Mi*. ,J. Pringle, commercial agent of the Bail way Department, has been in Hawera in connection with arrangements for an excursion from Wellington to the Dawson Falls during the latter part of January. He has been staying at the Central Hotel, 'and left to-day for Wellington. Colonel C. G. Powles, who will shortly retire from the central command at Palmerston North, was in Hawera last night on official business and loft for the south 'by mail train -this morning. The Prime Minister, the Bit. Hon. J. G. Coates, who is to formally open the Mokau bridge on Saturday, will travel to Now Plymouth by the north express train to-morrow. After the bridge opening ceremony, he is to proceed by ear to To Ivuiti, where he will join the Limited for Auckland.
A very old resident of Hawera. and South Taranaki passed away yesterday in the person of Mrs. J. F. Knight, of Victoria Street. Mr. and Mrs. Knight lived for many years at Riverlea before coming to Hawera.
Major-General Duncan, general officer commanding xhe British troops in North China, has been * appointed to command the First Division and he will be succeeded by Major-Gene rui Wardrop (states an official wireless message from England.) At a meeting or members of the Kapenga Band on Monday evening, secretary Thomson made leslin-j; reference to the loss sustained by bandmaster P. Thoumine in the recent death or his father, and moved a vote of condolence with the bereaved family. Mr. James Eddie, of the Kaponga post office staff, left on Monday last on transfer to W'aiuku, Auckland. During a residence of two years Mr. Eddie proved himself a capable officer, and closely identified himself with various amateur sports activities in Kaponga. He is succeeded by Mr. L. A. Wills, transferred from Ivarioi. At the monthly meeting of the Egmont County Council at Opunake on Tuesday, Cr. W. C. Green (chairman) moved a vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. F. E. \\ ilson. The motion was observed in silence. In view of their departure in the near future on a visit to Honolulu, Mrs. R. T. Bullock and Miss Bullock, of Hawera, were entertained at a farewell social tendered by a number of their friends' at the residence of Mrs. C. Robb last evening. Appropriate good wishes on behalf of the gathering were voiced by Mr. W. G. Simpson, the reply being given by Miss W. Bullock. On Tuesday Mrs. Bullock was the guest at afternoon tea of .members of the Park Croquet Club, and was presented with a bouquet. Mr. and Mrs. Bullock and family leave Hawera on Saturday, and will sail by the Aorangi, leaving Auckland on Tuesday. They expect to return earlv in February.
