In the course of his annual report at the breaking-up ceremony of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, the headmaster (Mr W. H. Moyes) referred to an exceptionally good scholastic record achieved by R. J. O’Dca (Hawera), an ex-pupil of the school, who, while still only 16 years of age, had passed his section of the EE.B. degree in Constitutional History, Jurisprudence, Roman Law, English and Latin. A dispute between the Waikato County Council and the Main Highways Board reached a head at the county meeting at Hamilton on Tuesday Tiie difference between the two bodies has occurred over the maintenance of the Ngaruawahia-Ohinewai stretch of the Main South Road, for which the county council demands a subsidy of £3 to £l, while the Highways Board will only come to an agreement on a. £2 for £1 basis. The county council is stubbornly resisting the Highways Board’s demand for a larger contribution, and decided yesterday, tailing further satisfaction, to ask for a commission on the matter.

The odour of bread that was never meant to be so baked tilled Queen Street, Mas ter ton, on Friday, when a delivery van owned by Mrs F. Pliysick, of Liansdowne Bakery, caught fire and was almost totally destroyed. The van, which was being driven by 1-J. Mooney, pulled up by a benzine bowser in. Queen Street at about 8.39 a.m., and was refilled to the extent of three gallons. Upon the pipe being removed from the tank, some of the benzine must have dropped on to the heated exhaust pipe, with the .result that there was a burst of flame, and the van caught fire. The brigade was called out and trained wia.ter on the outbreak, while the van was dragged away from the bowser by means of ropes. The flames were at length suppressed, but not before the vehicle was expensively damaged, and the load of bread ruined by fire and water. The van was insured for £6O.

The Kahutia (Gisborne) Bowling Club can now boast one of the finest pavilions in New Zealand. Erected' in memory of Sir James Carroll, it is. certainly a fitting memorial to the late “Ariki” of the club. It is an imposing structure, costing approximately £I6OO, and lias been built round the old building, and is of two storeys. The ground floor is of concrete, the walls of the first storey being finished in white roughcast. A balcony 6Sft long faces the green, and continues on the western side a distance, of 16ft. Access is given by means of a staircase running up through the old tea rooms. A feature of the upper storey is a. social ball 43ft by 30ft, in which the. dado is of heart rimu, above which the walls and ceiling are battened so ns. to introduce the club colours, black and white. This floor also contains a committee room 16ft by 15ft and a cloak room. The upper storey is constructed of wood with a hematite roof.

To-night, in the Opera House, will be riven the concert in aid of the iTaw*-ra School Orchestra, and Band and the Orchestral Society. A most attractive programme, lias been arranged, details of which were published in _ Wednes“Star.” and it is creating much interest. The Hawera School orchestra. band and choir, and the tiny children’s rhythmic band will give items, in conjunction with Whareroa School pupils, and a number of local artiste. At a meeting at Taihape yesterday of the shareholders of the -Otmiihape Freezing Company, a. resolution was carried that- the company go into liquidation. Mr J. D. Brice was appointed liquidator, with two. directors, who are also guarantors, as an advisory committee. The freezing ivories have ceased operation for some time, and the •stock has been consigned to. Feilding under ail agreement which expired last July. The company has been losing money for some time. Last yelar’s losses amounted to £2OOO. The decision arrived at. by the meeting mean the passing of another farmers’ cooperative concern.

Education Board yesbe ix lay on, the receipt of a circular from the Department to the effect that the services of all probationery assistants would terminate at January 31 nest, it was unanimously decided that, in view of the considered statements recently made iby the Minister of Eiducat ion to the effect that he was in sympathy with the reduction in the size of classes in order to obtain employment for the number of qualified teachers who have not a position, and at the same time make for increased efficiency in education. Regarding the- appointment of probationers ,the department advised that appointments should only be made after strict medical examination and that in the event oil the board being short of the specified number of well qualified applicants, the department suggested that applicants offering from other districts should be appointed to schools near their own homes.
