Appreciation was expressed at the annual meeting of the. Hawera Operatic Society last night of the good work carried out by the .secretary (Mr. \V. J. Wollett), treasurer (Mr. H. T. Underhill), and the auditor (Mr. C. Suisted). Mr. T. Witchell, who retires after 41 years as manager of the Bank of New Zealand, was entertained last night at Otalri and presented with a cheque for a substantial amount.Press Association.

'The permanent boarders' at the Central Hotel last, evening met Mir E. O. F let offer for the. purpose of saying goodbye to him prior to ibis departure for Grey mouth. Mr R. P. Morrissey, in hi, 3 usual eloquent style, conveyed to Mr Fetcher the congratulations of liis felW-boarders on his promotion and referred to the good fellowship and cordiality which had existed between Mr Fletcher and the other boarders at the hotel, and the high regard in which he was held bv. them. Mr W. A. Hewitt also spoke, expressing similar sentiments, presenting Mr Fletcher, on behalf of those present with a. set of real Irish linen handkerchiefs as a small tolren of the esteem with which tlie recurrent was held. He also wished him every .success in his new sphere of activity. Mr Fletebr (suitably replied, after which his health was drunk with the customary honours.
