MISSION WORK IN CHINA.

MATAPD TEACHER’S EXPERIENCE

M rs. Russell, headmistress of Matapu school, who is in New Zealand on a two years’ stay, has had an interesting career in China. In the course of a brief conversation with a “Hawera Star” representative, she gave incidents of her experiences in that country. She has been for a number of yeans attached to a mission station inland from Shanghai, as a teacher. She has brought over a Chinese girl, who is securing a medical training, and when this is completed they will be going back to China together to take up mission work, especially amongst the women and children. Mrs. Russell is enthusiastic in her love and admiration for the people, and is enthusiastic on her work amongst the children. Her experience of mission work goes hack to the times when the Boxer troubles disturbed the country and created ■ such consternation amongst the European nations. That rising, she said, was really a nationalist movement and directed against foreigners generally, and not against any particular people. Talking of her experiences during that time, Mrs. Russell said .she had one very trying ordeal when with others she was pursued by the rioters and she saved herself by feigning death on the roadside. She was kicked as she was lying on the ground, hut was able afterwards to escape to safety. The work in China is one that appeals to her strongly, and she is anxious to return and take it up once more. Meantime .slie is doing much appreciated service at Matnpu, where she is much esteemed by children and parents alike.
