REVOLT AT KOVNO
HAS COMEDY ELEMENT.
INVITED TO BREAKFAST. REBEL. OFFICERS CAPTURED. BY CABLE— PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. Received 9.40 a.iti. to-day. I. ON DON, Nov. 30. The Riga correspondent of' the “Daily Mail” reveals a comical side ot a revolt at Kovno. On Saturday a regiment with tanks and armoured cars concentrated in one of the fortresses. The officers, under Commandant Petrutis, sent an ultimatum to Smetona Valdemaras, demanding his resignation. Valdemaras invited the officers to breakfast, and discussed a bloodless capitulation. He served quantities of vodka and champagne and left his guests carousing. He sought an old friend, General Plehavickus, who gathered loyal flying officers and went to the assistance of General Valdemaras. Peeping into the diningroom, General Valdemaras saw that his guests were drunk. He had them loaded in motor cars and took them to gaol. It is reported that they have already been executed, and General Plehavickus reinstated as chief of staff, but another mutiny is expected. “Sydney Sun” cable.
