JEOPARDISING INDUSTRY.
WATER SI DERS ’ STRIKE. TRADES UNION INTERVENTION. i: Y CABLE -PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT MELBOURNE, Nov. 25. The exeeptive of this Australian and New Zealand Council of Trades Unions has resolved to .intervene/ in the overtime strike and request the man apemen t committee of the Waterside Workers’ Federation to meet representativps of the council in conference, nithouhg proceedings will be in camera. It is learned that strong exception is taken by some representatives to the action of tine watarsider.s jeopardising industry at a time when so many workers are unable to find employment. The view is expressed that should the strike he niermitted to extend, many, members of other unions will become automatically involved with consequent loss of employment. Objection is also taken to tlie dirpet action methods, of the wateuvsidcrs who -iiit, the strike iinto operation without first consulting other organisations which were likely to be affected. It i>s anticipated the wntensiders will resent the action of the council in Intervening in the dispute and refuse to grant the conference, but it is believed the council will lie called upon to discipline the Watersiders’ Federation with the object of protecting the interests of other waterfront unions. v An official statement setting out the views of the watersiders claims that the dispute originated in vexatious,, do, lays of the Arbitration Court in .Hearing the union’s plaint, together with the studied hostility of -employers in every attempt that ha® been made in the last two years by both the Court and the Federation to reach an agreement in keeping with the industry. The statement concludes that right from the commencement the Federation earnestly desired to effect an agreement. THREAT OF BLACK LIST. BRISBANE, Nov. 25.
