PROPOSED FINES OF TEACHERS. SOUTH TARANAKI PROTEST. “That this branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute takes .strong exception to the unmerited slur cast on the teaching profession by the proposed amendment of the Education Act giving education boards the powei; to inflict fines on teachers and deduct same from salaries.” This was the text of •a. resolution carried unanimously at a well-attended meeting of the South Taranaki branch of the institute in Hawera last night, Mr. L. J. Furrie (president) being in the chair. It was resolved to send forward a copy of the resolution to the. Minister.

In proposing the motion the chairman said the teachers of Taranaki considered the proposed amendment was an unmerited slur on the profession generally, and that they were sure other means .could lie found to meet any cases if they arose. Mr. F. A. Bates seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
