THE FISHING SEASON.
LOCAL ANGLERS’ SUCCESSES. BIG CATCHES REPORTED. That the present fishing season has so far proved the best experienced in South Taranaki is the general assertion of local anglers, many of whom have made exceptional catches of fish in the very best of condition. This is considered to be the result of the intensive efforts of the Acclimatisation Society over a} long period in stocking the streams until the present standard has been arrived at.
Among the local fishermen, Mr. W. S. Gibson is said to have been very successful, having made many catches of big fish in the Waingongoro stream. Mr L. S. Mackje (Otakeho) reports the following catches in that district: Messrs J. Mourie (six averaging l£-lb from the Punehu), R. Roberts and L. Mudford (nine averaging 21b from the Ouri and Taungatara), W. Maddock (two from the Otakeho), E. Putt (eight from the Otakeho), B. Badland and C. Davies (six from the Taungatara, averaging 41b), E. R. Hone and C. Amos (nine averaging 241 b from the Ivaupokonui at the Skeet Road). These must be regarded as very good considering that an average weight of l£lb is considered to be up to standard.
