Fill EBLIGHT A SPECT. BY TELEGRAPH-SPECIAL TO THE STAR. WELLINGTON, Sept. 20. An important amendment of the Orchard Tax Act has been introduced by Governor’s Message in the House of Representatives. It renews the former tax on commercial orchards ot Is per acre, the minimum being 5s annually, though o-rchardis with fewer than *l2O trees are exempt, as are all orchards where the fruit grown is not for sale. The proreeds of this tax are to he paid to the Fruitgrowers’ Fedto be expended in the furtherance of the interests of fruitgrowers on terms prescribed by regulation. Another portion of the Bill provides for a special tax to meet the cost of destruction of hawthorn hedges to combat the spread of fireblight. It applies to commericnl fruitgrowing districts, within which fruitgrowers may he required to pay an annual tax not exceeding 5s 'per acre. The receipts are to he paid to the fire-blight committee in the district in whidi the' money is collected, the Bill providing that the expenditure is to be for purposes connected with the control of firehlight. including the payment in respect of cutting down or the destruction of hawthorn hedges.
