HAWERA TRACK NOTES AND TOPICS. (By “Limited.”) With the local horses returned from Wanganui and the better weather, work on the Hawera racecourse will ,be : interesting from how on. 'The trial grass was open this morning and provided fair going. W. Pine sent Sovena hj r herself three furlongs the reverse waj' round, which she compassed in 40 3-ssec. Sovena is exceptionally well treated at Avondale and will probably make the trip. Benzora, another candidate for Avondale, was given his first fast work out for some time. He had Vivo for a companion and the pair jumped off at the two furlong peg, running to the five post—three furlongs — in 40see. Benzora. shaped well in this, his first essay the Auckland way round. Trainer 0. Cox, who has been confined to his house for some daj T s was out supervising the work of his horses. Lady Desmond and Euphonium were given a half-mile sprint. Euphonium finishing in front in sosec. Barryanada and Lady Cavendish did pace work—a task that was also allotted Reremoana.
J. Fryer sent his pair of chestnuts, Piiitonu and Iciogne, four furlongs, the pair finishing on terms in 55'sec. Men dip is looking, in great heart just now and is looked to show an improvement on last season’s form.
Silver Rule ran very green at Wanganui, but will benefit by the outing. She will probably make her next appearance at Otald next month. Silvermine did not do well on the trip down consequently was no't started and since his return the cold that had been inconveniencing him has developed, and he will h'ave to be let up for a sort spell. ■Partaga got badly left the first day at Wanganui. On Friday at the Hunt meeting he was beaten by a very narrow margin. Killoch had to be pulled up on account of same of the gear breaking.. Maurice Conway is still in hospital as result of his spill of Craigown. He is expected home within a fortnight. Bisox won her race at the Hunt meeting on Friday quite comfortably and on Saturday had everything else beaten when Catkin came along and caught her, winning well. Catkin is. pretty gcod and will be heard of again very shortly. A. E. Ellis is making himself very popular since coming to the North Island. 'He keeps himself very flit and is equally at home over steeplechase, hurdles or on the flat. He has been engaged to ride Te Monanui in the Avondale Cup. J. Barry left by the Niagara for Sydjney, where he is engaged to ride Mr. W. G. Stead’s horses at the A.J.C. meeting, which commence on October 1. Rov Reed, riding at Wanganui, came in for much commendation and critics are unanimous in their opinion that he is riding better than ever. T. Tito goes to Da-nnevirke to ride A'bisogne and H. Green’s horses. 'Old Argo, the hero of the hunting field and many a steeplechase, h'as taken on a new role —appearing at the Opera House in “The Arcadians” —the old fellow carries out his part well and is given an ovation on winning -his race—he literally “walks in.”
