WAN GANUI SCRATCHING. WANGANUI, Sept. 6. Mount Marta lias been scratched for all engagements at the Wanganui J.O. meeting. HAWERA TRACK NOTES AND COMMENT. (By “Limited.”) The wretched weather spoilt what promised to be an interesting couple of hours at the Hawera Racecourse this morning. All the tracks were awash and the onlv one fit to work on was the sand. " A few horses were sent along despite the heavy ram. W. Pine’s team for Wanganui were all given smart pace work, Denier and So vena working five furlongs in 1-10. Troilus went a mile and a quarter, tne last mile in 2min 3sec. Fermanagh and Killoeh also did pace work. J. Brown sprinted Silvermine and Orazone over half a mile, the pair finishing on terms in 52 l-ssec. M. Conway’s pair, Gasnapper and War Flame, ran four furlongs, the last three in 42sec. . Air A. Alexander’s Debutante Stakes candidate was exercised down the back of the course proper. Bisox was allotted a round of threequarter pace work. She is engaged at the Hunt meeting on Friday. C. Jackson’s pair, Vivo and Partaga, were also given useful tasks. Alost of the horses engaged at vvanganui will leave by to-morrow’s tram. AI. Conway takes Gasnapper and War Flame down on Thursday to compete at the Hunt meeting on Friday. The Wanganui spring meeting opens on Thursday and, being the first important meeting of the season in the North Island, claims special attention. Already there are a large number of horses on tlic spot and by Wednesday racehorse accommodation will bo taxed to the utmost. Hawera horses engaged the first day’ are Reremoana, Trolius, Sovena, Partaga, Denier, Vivo and Broad Acre, whilst this number will be considerably’ augmented for the Hunt meeting on Friday and the second day of AVanganui on Saturday’. Troilus has been working well and in his jumping essays has performed proficiently’. He is to have the services of a champion horseman in A. E. Ellis, and should be able to give his best display to date. His most formidable opponent appears to toe Just John. Broad Acre, in J. Thacker’s stable, ran convincingly at New Plymouth, and is going to carry some support from here in the Alaiden. C. France is to have the mount. . Partaga is in good trim and is to start in the Seafield Handicap of seven furlongs, in which he will meet some good performers. He will toe ridden toy R H. Reilly, who scored on Aliss Mercia and Tame Fox at Alar ton. AYith a decent run Partaga will toe hard to keep out of a place. Denier and Sovena are both accepted for in the Durie Hack race—the biggest field of the day, and tooth may not 'toe started in this race. Much will depend on the luck of the run. Denier is brilliant at the barrier and should escape a lot of trouble. L. Pine will ride Denier, which will be all in his favour. Vivo is the district’s representative in the Alaraiigai Handicap of furlongs, and though the company appears a bit select she may give a good account of herself is the going is firm. R. H. Reilly will have the mount on the Nolan Cup winner. Reremoana is reckoned the champion sprinter as he is at the top of the handicap in the Plying, conceding weight to some proved fast ones in Grand Knight, Shirley, Laughing Prince, etc. With a favourable jump out, Reremoana would too hard to head off, with all his weight, tout this race will serve to sharpen him up for his more important engagement, the Eclipse Stakes, on Saturday. Maurice Conway will ride Craigowen, Pink Rose and Killoeh in their engagements at the Hunt meeting. G. Ridgway rides Grand Knight and L. G. Morris Reremoana in the Flying Handicap on Thursday. A. McCormac, Bisox and Silver Rule; P. Adlam, Sovena and Fermanagh; C. France, Broad Acre and AVar Flame; T. Green, Eden Hall, In the Shade, Le Ohoucas and Prince Humphrey.
.Judging by his track work, Grand Knight is evidently back to his best form and is going to he hard to beat in his engagements.
Whcnuanui is greatly improved since bis last outing in public, and is also expected to make a good showing. Ashley Reed has gone to Sydney under engagement to ride Air Sol Green’s horses. Gothic, belonging to that owner, is one of the prime fancies for the Epsom. Mr .T. McMahon, chief stipendiary steward, was to leave by last Friday’s steamer on a trip to Australia.
Mr R. A. McKenzie was a passenger on his way to sec. his two horses, Pi nth air and Clarinda, perform. New Zealanders were nil agog to learn the result of the. first meeting of their champions in Australia on Saturday. The first round goes to Limerick, ridden by M. McCarten, with Com-
ineiidation close up third. They carved out the mile in limn 3Ssec at first outing, so something sensational in the way of time-making can toe looked for in .another month’s time, providing both these horses keep sound. Sunny Loch continues to impress track watchers in his jumping esasys, and is heralded as an early winner over the obstacles.
V. Collclo has so far recovered as to get about with, the aid of crutches to superintend the work of his charges. That good performer Royal Damon is showing good form again early, and in a try-out with Epistle the other morning at Hastings ran an attractive gallop over five furlongs in lmin 4sec. Royal Damon is nominated for Dannevirke, as is also Epistle. Blimp, by Gasbag—Maurfaux, a winner at Marton, is one of the first of Gasbag’s progeny to score. There is another by Gasbag in the same stable, half-sister' to Crown Area, shaping particularly well and likely to bring Gasbag’s name to the fore as a sire.
