A BOOKMAKER FINED
(DY TELEGKArH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., Sept. 5. “Although the accused lias been bookmaking for some years and carries on a. fairly large business, there has never been any suggestion whatever that he has not played the game right up to the last halfpenny,” said counsel for James Purves, who was charged at the Magistrate’s Court this morning with having used his premises as a common gaining house. “I suppose he would not- get through the work if he didn’t.” said the magistrtae.
The police statement given was to the effect that on the morning of September 3 about £SO was taken is as many minutes. There, were no convictions against the accused previously, hut the maximum penalty was asked. A fine of £IOO was imposed. ESCAPEE RECAPTURED. PALMERSTON X., Sept. 5. John Bernard McDonald, who escaped from gaol at Wellington oni Friday, was recaptured yesterday, and was charged with escaping from legal confimnent. The accused was remanded to appear at Wellington to-morrow.
