RUGBY.

TARANAKI TOURISTS.

PRAISED IN CHRISTCHURCH,

PETTY’S CONDITION NOT SERIOUS

(By Telegraph-Special Reporter.)

CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 29. Rugby supporters have been liberal in their praise of the- Taranaki touring team and generally recognise that only in wing three-quarters was the local team superior to the visitors. It was a severe test for such young players as Dinniss and' Aledley to be opposed to me of the class of Robilliard and Steele, who have both achieved international distinction. It was Robilliard’s day out and he made some dazzling runs, though Dailey was principally responsible for giving him his opportunity. One prominent Rugby fan said the Taranaki pack was worthy of any vanguard. The brawny packmen who comprise it were tigerish, giving every ounce of weight and bone and muscle. Walter, Ward and O’Keefe were outstanding, and the wing forward, who is usually a scrum forward, was a worthy antagonist for Scrimshaw. There was not a great deal between the packs except that the Amber and Blacks held a slight advantage in. the tight. Generally speaking, they play with a lavish expenditure of energy, but there were occasions when several of the Canterbury packmen “winged it.’’

Petty’s condition is not serious. He suffered slight concussion, but when seen this afternoon he looked in the pink and expected to be released from hospital in time to catch Tuesday’s boat and reach Palmerston North in time to see the Shield match on Wednesday. He has been well visited in hospital by old boys of the High School. He has also a minor injury to his leg which may incapacitate him from play for some time.

Wairarapa is now leading with two wins. Welling--ton and Alanawatu have one win each, and Wanganui two losses. To-morrow Wairarapa and Wellington meet.
