MAInAIA ASSOCIATION. The Alan-aia 'Girl Guides’ Association held its annual meeting in the Band Boom, Manaia, on Thursday. There was a small but enthusiastic attend a,nee. Apologies were received for the absence of the president, Mrs. A. G. Rnnett, and Mi's. H. O. Oircliard. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mrs A. G. Bennett; vice-president, Mrs. C. R. Davies; secretary and treasurer, Rev. 11. 0. Orchard; executive, Mrs. Geo. Meuli, Mrs J. A. Hansen, Mrs Patterson, Mrs Solomon, Mrs H. C. Orchard, Mrs. Miller, Mrs A. H. Christie, Mrs Gamlin, Mrs Innis.
in tiie labsence of the president, Rev. Orchard: was appointed chairman, and read the report oi the year’s work, which was very satisfactory. On June 24, 1926, ten girls paraded with Muss Jlil. Bell (captain), and Miss J. Hill (lieutenant) in the Band Room, Manaia, kindly granted by the Town Board for their meetings. Subsequently Miss Bell resigned to take up nursing in Wellington, and her resignation was accepted with regret, and Miss J. Hill was -appointed captain, and Miss M. Ritter lieutenant, by the executive. Our company of 32 guides.- reflects great credit ou their leaders. The splendid work of Captain J. Hi-11, who has been i.n the movement from the .beginning at Manaia, and who has made an excellent leader, is finely -backed up by her Lieutenant AI. Ritter, who is a keen officer. Manaia Company is fortunate in its officers. The patrol leaders are a credit to the company, and during the recent visit from the provincial and district commissioners, were complimented on their work as were the guides. The company as a happy one and keen on its work. A “shop day” was held during the year in Mr Cosgrave’s shop; it w.a-s a success, £lO being raised. Our first birthday was held on Thursday, June 30, 1927, in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Manaia, when a pleasant evening was spent, the executive entertaining the company with a birthday tea. The guides later providing a 'programme. During the tea the -president welcomed the commissioners Airs Hodson, Provincial Commissioner,. and Mrs. ' Houston, District Commissioner, and later parents an«.l friends. After inspection and roll call, various badges were .presented and around .a very realistic camp fire, the guides sang their songs. The gathering closed with a few well chosen words from the Commissioner and president. The executive have been in the fortunate position to be able to heln the girls in purchasing uniforms, etc, up till February 21 of this year, the company helping with proceeds of their shop day, when it was decided that guides must help themselves. Six of our girls have gained the Entertainers badge and eight have won second-class badges, and quite a number are ready for’ their test, eleven service, stars have been awarded.
During the year quite ,a number of outings, picnics on. the beach, teas in the park and tracking have been held, and the girls given opportunities to prepare for the various tests. At Christmas six Christmas stockings were filled anc] sent to- .& family of children at Alanaia. In February the girls attended the. Duke and Duchess of York’s visit, and were kindly entertained by the Hawera guides. Airs. Geo-. Aleuli placed her drawing room at the disposal of the guides for the entertainers test and a.fterwards entertained the company at afternoon tea. Field exercises were held during the winter months on fine -days. It was decided at the annual meeting to hold -a shop day -at some future date.. Service stars were won by the following: Captain J. D. Hill, Guides Marjorie Howell, Bessie Younrr, Molly Snroull. Doris Dakers, Connie Edwards, Alyra- Hansen, Helen Hair, Beryl Hobday, Margaret Cosgrove, Jean Aleuli.
