FAREWELL TO MISS HAWKES.

(From Our Own Correspondent). A very large number of parents gathered at the school last Ftiday to bid farewell to Miss Hawkes, who has been transferred to the Motoron. School (New Plymouth). Mr W. A. Guy (chairman of the school, committee) opened tihe proceedings. During Miss Hawkes’s five years’ stay on the teaching .staff 01 Matapu School, she had endeared herself both to the children and to many friendis. Mis® Hawkes was one of the best teachers among the younger children that Matapu had ever had, and he felt .sure that both the parents and children were very sorry to part with her, but wished her every Happiness and success in her new school. She would take with her happy recollections of her stay in Matapu. Mr Gw then presented Miss Hawkes with a beautiful gold wristlet watch from the parents of the district and a brush and comb and scent bottle from the children. Mr Guy then asked Mr O’Snlivan, who is president of the Tennis Club, to speak. Mr Sullivan said he had been very sorry to hear that Miss Hawke® was leaving us, as .she wais one of the prime movers in securing the funds to enable the school to acquire the splendid tennis court lit had. On behalf of the members of the Teams Club and others, he had much pleasure in presenting her with a manicure set. _ • . Miss Hawkes said she hated going away, as she loved the children clearly. She could not’ say what she felt, hut thanked all those present for the very nice things she had received. All joined in three hearty cheers and “She’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” terminated a very jolly meeting. All the children, one by one., bid Miss Hawkes good-bye, as also did the parents present.
