YOUNG VEAL.
NEW ZEALAND’S EXPORTS
MINISTER DEFINES POSITION
Considerable doubt has existed recently as to whether the imjjortatiou into England of the meat of young calves would be permitted by the Home authorities during this season. Commenting on the matter on Saturday at Wellington, says the “Dominion.” the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. (). J. Hawken) said that last season a quantity amounting to about 150 tons of this class of meat was exported from JNew Zealand to the Old Country; but this year the Govern- ’ ment received advice that the Home authorities contemplated prohibiting i its import Negotiations were immedi- 1 ately opened by cablegram, and inlormation has now been received that for the last six months of this year, boneless veal, packed in a specified manner, will be looked upon as admissible, but will be inspected and admitted or rejected 'on its merits. Referring to the question which would arise at the end of the year, as to the continuance of the trade, the Minister stated that the Government expected to receive through the High Commissioner partite bus of conditions which would have to he observed in that connection by exporters. “There are indications.” concluded the Minister, “that the Home authorities are not at all favourably disposed towards the admission of very youn£ veal; but if exporters will take care to see that only the very best class of the meat is sent, and that it is packed in the manner required, I am of opinion that there is an opening for building up quite a considerable export trade out of what in the past has keen largely a by-product of the dairy industry in the Dominion.”
