ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Inquests were held to-day on John Henry Mickle, a wharf labourer, aged 42, and Michael Delaney, a labourer, aged 37, who were both found last Sunday floating in the harbour. Verdicts were returned of found drowned, no evidence being available as to how they got in the water. An inquest was also held on Walter Valentine Keay, a machinist, aged 37, of 126 Elizabeth Street, who died of a fractured skull as the result of falling while trying to avoid an approaching motor-car on Saturday night. A verdict was returned of accidental death, no blame being attachable to the driver of the motorcar, whose statement that his car did not strike deceased was accepted. IN VER CAD GILL, J uly 20. Joseph Shepherd, traffic inspector in the cmplov of the New Zeaand Railways, met with a tragic fate at seven o’clock last evening. When returning to Invercargill on a motor trolley, for some unaccountable reason the troulv left the rails on the bridge over the Waihooa.i stream, catapulting Mr Shepherd into the water. Two bovs heard the splash and believe they saw the body being earned down the stream, but so far a search by the nolice and railway officers has been fruitless.

William Rennie, a single man, was found drowned tin's afternoon in one of the Lyttelton Borough Council’s receiving tanks connected with the Heathcote Valley water supply. When found the body had been in the water only a few hours. Rennie bad been employed by the borough council for some years, residing near the scene of his drowning. Arrangements have been made to empty and clean the tank immediately. CHRISTCHURCH, July 20. ■ • Two people were injured in a collision shortly after midday between a tram and a motor truck on the Ricoarton Road. John Lowther. a married man. was taken to hospital with a fractured right shoulder and a fractured left leg. A man named Mumford suffered minor injuries only. The truck on which Lowther was riding as a passenger was hacking out on to the roadway, and it struck a passing tram. Mumford was a passenger in the tram. INVERCARGILL, July 20. A young man named Desmond Keith, whose skull was fractured a fortnight ago through a motor capsizing. died in hospital to-day. never having regained consciousness.
