The entrance lock Ls a triumph of engineering, making the docks laccessiblc to the largest ships afloat at- any state of the tide. The King, dressed as an Admiral of the Fleet, stood at the salute on the bridge of the steamer Gala-tea as the vessel cut the siil<k ribbon in entering the lock in the presence of tens of thousands of cheering spect/a-tors. Their Majesties, afterwards returned to London. RUGBY, July 18. The King and Queen, who removed with their Court to Edinburgh last week, concluded their official visit to Scotland yesterday. They will break their return journey to* London a-t Liverpool, where the King will open the Gladstone Dbek, the largest tin the world, fo-morrow. Arrangements -have been made to accommodate 1500 people to witness the opening ceremony, and the King’s speech will be broadcast,.
The dock has a water area of over 58 acres, ringed by three miles of granite-faced quays, on which huge warehouses, have been erected. The new dock, which hiais cost over £7,500.0(H), is situated at- the extreme north end of Liverpool’s seven lineal miles of docks, with their 37 miles of quays. Nearly 2500 men have been employed for many years in creating the new docks on a site which was formerly waste- The first section of the system, the largest dry dock in Europe, took seven years to complete, and was opened by the King in 1913. The Royal party will, steam direct into the new docks to-morrow, stripping a silver ribbon -stretched across the entrance. Immediately after tomorrow’s opening one of the largest Atlantic liners will enter from c-he river, to be the first- ocean-going vessel to berth in the new docks.
