ON WET WICKET

THE YORKSHIRE MATCH. NEW ZEALANDERS 133 for 7. RHODES PROVES DIFFICULT. BY GAELS— PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT Received 10.5 a.m. to-day. LONDON, July 4. Owing to the rain, play in the match between New Zealand ai'd Yorkshire could not be resumed till 4.20 p.m. on a ruined wicket. Rhodes practically had the batsmen at his mercy, Lowry alone being able to- cope with the bowling. 'When seven wickets had .alien for 133, bad light caused stumps to be drawn for tlie day. The scores were: NEW ZEALAND. First Innings. Dempster, c Sutcliffe, b Douglas 3 Blunt, c Sutcliffe, b Douglas 11 Mill, c Douglas, b Macauley Page, c Sutcliffe, b Rhodes 48 Page, c Sutcliffe, h Rhodes 1° McGirr, st Dolphin, b Rhodes ... 5 Dacre, c Holmes, b Rhodes It* James, not out I Allcott;, not out - Extras Total, for three wickets 133 (Note.-— I The total is nine out, one of the scores evidently being mutilated).

LOWRY’S PLUCKY STAND. Received 10.20 a.m. to-day. LONDON, July 4. The wicket was thoroughly saturated and lifeless, but Lowry and Mills, by watching Rhodes most carefully, managed to offer some sort of defence for a considerable time. At one period they were 20 minutes in getting six. Mills busted altogether for 50 minutes, and then fell to a brilliant catch by Douglas at square leg. Lowry resisted for two hours and 20 minutes, batting in the pluckiest way, and hitting hard when the chance offered. He was missed at the wicket when 24, and was eventually caught on the boundary after hitting five fours. The others made a poor fist of Rhodes’s left-hand breaks. The attendance was very small.
